Official two-way conversion in Toronto
The Toronto Raptors have converted guard Malachi Smith to a two-way contract for the NBA 2026/27 season, effective September 21. The move is official and completes the franchise third and final two-way slot after Jaden Bradley was promoted to a standard multi-year deal.
The transaction appears in NBA.com oficial and was reported by RealGM, which notes Smith had already signed with Toronto in August on a training camp contract and that the conversion allows him to split time between the main roster and Raptors 905.
Smith profile
Smith, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Gonzaga, arrives in Toronto after closing last season with the Brooklyn Nets. He went undrafted in 2023 and has moved between the G League and the NBA; in 15 games with Brooklyn he averaged 8.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 23.9 minutes, shooting 48.5% from the field and 43.5% from three.
RealGM adds that he also played 39 development league games last season, averaging 14.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists, a playmaking profile that fits the development structure Toronto is building.
Fit within Toronto structure
The two-way contract allows the Raptors to evaluate Smith in preseason and throughout the season at controlled cost. While he remains on that deal, he can be active for up to 50 regular-season games with Toronto and complete the rest of his schedule with the affiliate.
For Toronto, the conversion closes the two-way map alongside Chucky Hepburn and Trey Jemison and keeps Smith within the franchise ecosystem after he signed as a free agent on August 17.
