Nikola Kalinić has announced his retirement from professional basketball ahead of the new season, closing a career closely linked to the EuroLeague and his most recent spell with Crvena Zvezda. The decision was shared by the player on the Kod Luke i Kuzme podcast and was picked up by Eurohoops and Sportando, marking the start of a new chapter off the court.

A considered decision

The Serbian forward, who won the EuroLeague in 2017 with Fenerbahçe Beko, explained that the loss of enthusiasm was not sudden. He said that for a long time, over a couple of seasons, he had not played with the same passion as before and that although physically he felt great — describing himself as flying — he could no longer find himself in basketball terms and felt uncomfortable on the floor.

The mental side

Kalinić stressed it was all in his head. He underlined that his physical condition remained excellent and that there were no major limitations, but the mental disconnect from competition had become persistent. That gap between physical readiness and motivation was, in his words, the decisive factor in ending his playing career.

Staying with Crvena Zvezda and moving to coaching

The next step is already mapped out. The player said he has agreed to remain with Crvena Zvezda in a coaching staff role, acting as a bridge between the roster and the staff while he prepares to become a head coach. The plan foresees his integration into the Belgrade club’s technical structure.

Competitive legacy

His retirement closes the career of a key European forward of the last decade, with EuroLeague prominence, domestic titles and international experience with Serbia. His departure removes a reference for competitiveness and tactical understanding from the continent’s courts.
