Patrick Beverley believes some current NBA superstars would not be able to play in European basketball for a primarily mental reason, beyond physical or technical ability.

The assessment, in which he stressed he was not disrespecting individual talent and drew on twelve seasons in the NBA and spells in Europe, was published by Sportando and BeBasket following his appearance on the Thanalysis Show hosted by Thanasis Antetokounmpo.

Mentality as the key gap

Asked whether NBA players could thrive on the Old Continent, the new Boulazac Basket Dordogne guard argued the obstacle would not be athletic. He said many profiles underestimate the daily demands of the European context and summed up his view by stating that some current superstars simply could not do it, without naming specific examples.

Team-first structure and defense

Beverley described a completely different adjustment, with the team ahead of any individual and the coach controlling everything, a set-up he compared to a college team made of adults. He also pointed to more collective travel and living conditions than in the NBA, noted after his recent arrival in France, and to a style of play built around defensive organization and possession management.

The 38-year-old veteran underlined that in Europe everything is built around defense and the need to work possessions deep before taking a shot.

The conversation took place on the show presented by Thanasis Antetokounmpo, where Beverley shared his perspective after joining French basketball with experience of both the NBA and the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.
