Charles Barkley has said the 2026-27 season will be his last on Inside the NBA, tying his decision to host Ernie Johnson. The former player placed his departure at the end of the upcoming campaign, conditional on Johnson maintaining his plan to step away.
The announcement came during his appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, where he explained that Johnson asked him for a two-year commitment before the show moved from TNT to ESPN. Barkley, 63, said he had originally planned to retire at 60 but stayed to support the show's staff while a new broadcast agreement was negotiated. When TNT lost its NBA rights and ESPN acquired Inside the NBA, he chose to continue in part to help preserve jobs for the off-camera team he has worked with since joining in 2000, on the programme Johnson has hosted since 1990 alongside Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith.
In the conversation he detailed his message to Johnson about committing for one more season, saying next year would be his last at 100 percent unless Johnson changes his mind.
