FC Barcelona enter the 2026/27 season in a different position from a year ago. The club is confirmed for the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and Liga Endesa 2026/27, with both competitions set to tip off in late September. The roster has been overhauled on a broad scale, and this editorial analysis views the project as starting from a new foundation rather than continuity around a settled core.
The preseason has coincided with a wave of moves that reshape the locker room. Departures including Tomas Satoransky, Will Clyburn, Tornike Shengelia, Willy Hernangómez, Nicolas Laprovittola, Myles Cale and Miles Norris remove pieces that carried real weight in recent rotations. On the incoming side, the club has added profiles at every position, with particular emphasis on playmaking, perimeter play and interior depth.
Squad changes
The current list features fifteen players under contract. At point guard, Justin Robinson from Paris Basketball, Umoja Gibson and Juan Núñez stand out. The backcourt and wing group includes Kevin Punter, Darío Brizuela, Tyrese Martin, Stanley Umude, Agustín Ubal and Joel Parra. Power forward brings Tosan Evbuomwan and Olivier Nkamhoua, while the frontcourt relies on Olek Balcerowski, Josh Nebo, Yoan Makoundou and Justin Minaya, signed on 1 September from Osceola Magic through June 2028.
The most notable summer additions include Robinson, Nebo from EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, Makoundou from AS Monaco Basket announced on 22 August, Gibson, Balcerowski and Ubal. Minaya strengthens perimeter defence on a two-year deal. The squad still features holdovers such as Punter, Brizuela, Parra and Núñez, though the overall group is largely new.
At the point, Robinson brings recent European experience from Paris and can compete for early minutes alongside Gibson and Núñez.
Identity and strengths
On paper, this Barcelona side looks more physical on the perimeter and deeper inside than last season's version. Makoundou and Nebo add size and mobility around the rim; Minaya bolsters the defensive wing; and Nkamhoua arrives off a strong FIBA World Cup run with Finland, averaging 13.6 points and 5.3 rebounds across eight games.
From the perimeter, Punter remains the clearest offensive reference. He averaged 14.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in two Spanish Cup games in 2026/27, underlining his scoring role as the main carryover weapon. Brizuela finished EuroLeague 2025/26 at 8.9 points per game over 38 outings, while Parra contributed 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds in 40 EuroLeague games. The versatility of Martin, Umude and Ubal on the wing opens tactical options for more spacing or bigger lineups.
Risks
The main question mark is integrating a group with limited shared experience. Losing players with defined roles forces a rebuild of offensive chemistry and defensive rotations, a process that usually costs EuroLeague teams the opening weeks of official competition.
Tosan Evbuomwan, expected to play a key role at power forward, starts the season with an estimated three-week absence due to subluxation, according to the club's medical report. That early sideline stint reduces interior margin and pushes more minutes onto Nkamhoua, Nebo, Balcerowski and Makoundou until he returns.
Backcourt depth also needs time: three point guards compete for the same minutes and none yet carries the locker-room weight of Satoransky or Laprovittola. Finally, the EuroLeague-Liga Endesa double schedule will punish any rotation mistakes or minute-management issues with high-minute players.
Expectations and outlook
This analysis places Barcelona in a building phase rather than immediate title-favourite territory. The individual quality of the roster supports a push for the upper half of Liga Endesa and a playoff race in EuroLeague, but the ceiling will depend on how quickly the group gels and on the health of key pieces such as Evbuomwan and Punter.
In the ACB, a reasonable editorial scenario — not a confirmed forecast — would see the club settle in the top eight and compete for quarter-finals if defensive consistency arrives. In Europe, reaching the postseason bracket would match the roster's potential if Robinson and Punter provide the expected leadership. Clearing that bar would require steady interior production from the opening month.
Opening fixtures
The official calendar opens in EuroLeague on 24 September 2026 against Anadolu Efes Istanbul at Palau Blaugrana. Two days later, on 26 September, Barcelona debut in Liga Endesa at home against Leyma Coruña.
The early run includes road trips to Dubai Basketball and Besiktas Istanbul in EuroLeague, plus a Liga Endesa visit to UCAM Murcia on 4 October. At home, Barcelona host Zalgiris Kaunas on 9 October in Europe and Valencia Basket on 11 October in the domestic league, before closing the first half of October against Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv at the Palau. The opening stretch mixes demanding EuroLeague opponents with a first domestic test against Leyma Coruña that should gauge where the project stands.
