Sandfort, a 24-year-old forward out of Iowa, joined Minnesota on a training camp contract September 23 after making his NBA debut last season with the Oklahoma City Thunder in four games. In the G League with Oklahoma City Blue he averaged 10.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists over 25 outings.
CBS Sports adds that after leaving the main roster, Sandfort is expected to report to affiliate Iowa Wolves, while remaining eligible for a future call-up by the Timberwolves.
What the waiver means
By leaving the Timberwolves roster, Sandfort vacates a preseason spot and becomes a free agent until his next destination is settled. The move does not necessarily end his relationship with Minnesota, but follows the usual training camp contract path toward the G League.
